[WIG SIG] Participatory Game Design

Dear members of IGDA DK,

On the 19th of May, we will have the 3rd Woman in Games SIG meeting. Rilla Khaled from IT University will talk about about Participatory Game Design.

Abstract
What happens when you have ten 14 year old girls in a computer lab at a high school working for three consecutive days on making their own video games, when none of them have ever programmed before? What happens when you set out with intentions of promoting gender equality and empowerment, but the people you’re hoping to empower don’t share your beliefs about what empowerment looks like? What happens when you use equality-centric design methods in a cultural context in which equality cannot be taken for granted? In this talk, I will recount experiences of the Girl Game Workshop, a game development event that took place at Den Islamisk Arabiske Privatskole in Copenhagen late last year. I will cover what succeeded, what failed, and what we need to keep in mind when working and designing in inter-cultural contexts.

What: Participatory Game Design
When: 19th of May from 18:00 – 20:00
Where: Pilestræde 43, 3rd floor, 1112 Copenhagen K

After the talk we will go to Charlie’s Bar for a cold brew!

[Unity SIG] Unity Special Interest Group Launch!

Dear all members of the IGDA,

We are proud to announce our new Unity Special Interest Group!

In collaboration with Unity Technologies we are arranging successive Special Interest Group meetings in March and April 2011. The meetings are open and free of charge.

The intention of these successive SIG meetings is partly to introduce people to Unity – but also to create a discussion around the specific areas of the engine. So there will be some content for beginners as well as advanced Unity users.

The meetings will take place at IT University on Thursdays in March and April from 18:00 – 21:00.

Each SIG meeting will be a 3-hour session divided into the following:

18:00 – 20:00 Unity Talk & Demo
20:00 – 21:00 Discussion & Hands-on assistance

For the discussion part of the SIG meetings we would like to hear about your ideas on how you see the Unity engine in the future. Please come forward with any ideas, suggestions and wishes.

For the hands-on assistance, which will take place at the same time as the discussion, we encourage people to bring their laptops and projects, as you will be able to get individual guidance by the Unity people for specific issues and questions that you might have for your project.
